Roadworks are being carried out on behalf of BT and Highways England on the A595 to the north of Westlakes Science & Technology Park, before the hospital roundabout. The works are underway now and scheduled to finish at 5pm tomorrow.
As a result of the roadworks, and the scale of disruption similar works have caused in the past, we have made the pre-emptive decision to open the emergency exit from the park to alleviate traffic issues. As many of our park residents are aware, this is not a decision we have taken lightly and the operation of this exit requires a number of safety steps.
The opening of the emergency exit
Following a health and safety risk assessment, the emergency exit at Westlakes Science and Technology Park (normally reserved for the sole use of ambulances and other emergency service vehicles) will now be opened:
We will liaise with Highways England and, if the works overrun tomorrow, a further assessment will be undertaken to determine if we open the entrance tomorrow evening.
The exit is between Dalton Facility and Herdus House and will be signposted within the park.
The police have been consulted on this matter and we thank them for their assistance. BEC must stress that use of this entrance and exit is at users own risk, and while the gate does look wide from the main road on the park – the tarmac path leading from it gets significantly narrower before emerging on a narrow country lane that has fast traffic moving on it. Please assess if your car will be able to use the track safely. We also urge users to be especially alert to any emergency service vehicles that may need to use the path.
Please also be aware that there are a number of other roadworks in the area at the moment so while the emergency exit might normally have been faster for you, please check other roadworks won’t negate the use of that route from the park.
In due consideration of these risks the following safety steps will be in place:
